In this 2 hour session, you will learn how to: identify tiles and suits, read the National Mah Jongg League (NMJL) card, build the wall and understand the flow of play. And yes, someone will call mahj!
All 101 classes include large print NMJL cards ($15 value) for all participants.
Tailored to beginners who know the basics. (Mahj 101 strongly recommended as a prerequisite!). We will focus on game rules and build independent play skills. In this 2 hour session you will learn how to: read the NMJL card more fluently, understand exposure decisions, discuss when to pivot and play full rounds with coaching.
Already know the basics but haven't played in a while? This class is for you. Mahj Refresh is a fast-paced review session designed to knock the rust off and get you back to confident, fluent play. We'll cover reading the current card, hand-building strategy, calling and defense, and all the little rules that tend to get fuzzy between games — no judgment, just a quick tune-up.
Perfect for players who've taken a break, learned a while ago and want a confidence boost.
Ready to go beyond the basics? This class dives into tile strategy: smarter hand selection, when to play offense, reading your opponents' discards, and how to make confident decisions as the game unfolds.
We'll also break down scoring inside and out: understanding hand values on the current card, when it pays to change your hand, and how to think a few moves ahead instead of just reacting.
